NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR APPOINTED TO LEAD RECOGNITION CAMPAIGN

Date: 05 January 2009

The future of British tchoukball looked even more promising today as the Tchoukball Association of Great Britain (TAGB) appointed a new Executive Director to spearhead its work to become an officially-recognised sport and national governing body.

Phil Moore took up the role with the unanimous support of member clubs. He brings with him 17 years experience of both playing and running tchoukball – and is now focused on helping the sport gain recognition status from government agency UK Sport and the four home country sports councils (Sport England, Sportscotland, the Sports Council for Wales and the Sports Council for Northern Ireland).

Phil’s main role will be co-ordinating the delivery of the TAGB’s new Recognition Action Plan which sets out the key actions that tchoukball needs to deliver between 2008 and 2010 if it wants to be in the best possible position to become recognised officially.

Phil said: “We want to see tchoukball recognised because it represents a milestone for the development of our sport. That status will help accelerate our growth rate by giving us more access to funding and the expertise available from the sports councils.

“With or without official recognition we are of course still a sport. This is about improving tchoukball for all our participants and making it more sustainable for the future.”

The Recognition Action Plan will focus on building tchoukball's participation base in schools, universities and clubs whilst also strengthening the sport’s domestic competition structure. There will also be co-ordinated activity in areas of the UK new to tchoukball.

Much of the work has already begun with tchoukball clubs up and down the country playing their part by delivering coaching sessions in schools, demonstrations and volunteering for the TAGB.

In a letter to the TAGB, the home country sports councils welcomed the prospect of tchoukball developing. They said:

“The Sports Council were satisfied that tchoukball met all the other recognition criteria and felt it has a great deal of potential for growth and develop. Your existing efforts to expand tchoukball were noted, especially your work with County Sport Partnerships in delivering your ‘New Year New Sport’ initiative.

“Tchoukball is a unique and exciting activity with a great appeal particularly to young people.”
